Previous BB breeds & Izzy's
Over the years Barrowbunnies have always had certain breeds but tried others.
From the very start there has always been the mini lops, followed by Lion Lops.
The Lion Lops have left after 20 years and Lionheads seem to be getting well established over the last few!
We followed our hearts for our chosen breeds, some with success in showing but not so in other ways.
We wanted to try a fur breed and after much deliberation and looking at the rarer varieties we decided upon the Hulstlander. They are a stunning breed with their white coats and blue eyes. The rabbits we had were sweet natured unlike others seen on the show bench, but we knew many were crossing them with the Vienna rabbit to alter the coat (sadly also altering the type and personality)
We had some good successes with the Hulstlander but sadly our does did not breed well for us. We tried asking other exhibitors for some outcross does, however the nature of competitive people is they will buy but won't help/sell. Sadly after several years we had to give up this breed (the winning bucks we had left were snapped up).
We bred and showed Netherland Dwarf rabbits for a several years with some success. Our first baby chin coming 4th U5 in a National show. Our agouti's gaining a few Best of Breeds etc. Many made fantastic comments on the otters. Sadly we experienced Max Factor. We brought in some outcrosses with the promise from the breeders that their lines didn't carry MF, unfortunately this was not the case.
There are certain genes that are not pleasant to experience especially if the animal suffers and all because a MF carrier shows a tuft of fur between the ears giving the illusion of a bigger head.
We could and can not be a part of unethical breeding.
We put our hand to the broken mini rex. We had been working on the breed and perfecting the coat and pattern for a several years. They were looking good. However the club decided to change the standard on the broken pattern just as we were ready to show! This was enough for us to put our hands up in surrender!
There were other breeds that didn't even got off the ground. Havana's but they wouldn't breed! Dwarf lops but after spending a small fortune on a stud buck it died whilst the co-owner was using it.
The crux is unfortunately in any competitive situation with animals not everyone is really out to help!
Below are images with notes of some of our other breeds.

WALL OF FAME
Izzy's rabbits
|
Young Izzy wanted a start up and had her heart set on a couple of different breeds. The breeders only offered her unstandardized colours and over the weight and older rabbits that wouldn't breed. Such a shame. We knew starting from scratch would see several years of hard work after having done the same ourselves with the mini lops. Rarely will an exhibitor sell their best animals (well not many good folk!) However to sell a hopeful young exhibitor their cast-offs was somewhat saddening. Izzy, as a junior did show a few of her rabbit's lightly in both open and pet shows. She aspired to show broken miniature rex with help and guidance from mummy and granny. Sadly when mummy's health was effected by her allergies Izzy could no longer attend shows but kept her pets. |
